7:31 am - Today the web is silent
Today the web is silent.
Please copy and paste this into your own blogs, email lists and bulletins.

Today, the web is silent. Oh, the chattering classes of bloggers will continue to comment, ridicule and converse as liberally as ever. But the radio stations are silent. Thousands of streaming audio stations from the tiniest indie stations, midsize companies like radioIO to media giants like Yahoo! and MTV will either cease streaming altogether, or play static interspersed with public awareness announcements.

Why?

They are protesting a grossly unfair copyright fee being assessed to Internet radio, a fee that is so enormous that this one fee alone in most cases adds up to over 100% of a company's total revenue. This threatens to shut down the entire Internet radio industry on July 15 2007. Wack, huh? We don't get it either especially since broadcast radio is totally exempt from the fee and satellite radio pays a small percentage of their revenue for the same fee. It's unfair and one act in congress can overturn it and give the small businesses of Internet radio parity with satellite radio fees. That act is "The Internet Radio Equality Act" and it's working it's way through congress but not fast enough. Internet radio's bill for this fee comes due on July 15 (retroactive to Jan. 2006) so it needs co-sponsors right away and that's where this protest comes in. The belief is today's silencing would draw attention to what a big part of your day Internet radio is and the hope is that you will pick up the phone and call congress on internet radio's behalf. We know phone calls from constituents work better than email. With the support of net radio listeners there are over 120 co sponsors on the House side but the senate side is sorely lacking.

According to Lawbean:

In March, the Copyright Royalty Board announced that it would raise royalties for Internet broadcasters, moving them from a per-song rate to a per-listener rate. The increase would be made retroactive to the beginning of 2006 and would double over the next five years. After the announcement, a group of broadcasters spearheaded by National Public Radio petitioned the CRB for a rehearing, but a panel of judges denied the request less than a month later. Internet radio sites would be charged per performance of a song. A "performance" is defined as the streaming of one song to one listener; thus a station that has an average audience of 500 listeners racks up 500 "performances" for each song it plays.

According to Kurt Hanson's Radio and Internet Newsletter:

… the royalty rate decision — for the performance alone, not even including composers' royalties! — is in the in the ballpark of 100% or more of total revenues.

The new royalty rates will go into effect on July 15, 2007, retroactive to January 1, 2006. More than a few Internet broadcasters will likely cease business on that day. Or, they may just move offshore. If they do that, though, what that likely means is that terrestrial broadcasters who broadcast a simultaneous internet stream will cut the internet stream.

If you believe in Internet Radio (and I do!), and want to save it, here's what you can do.

#1 If you live in the US, call your representatives and senators. Get their numbers at congress.org just by putting in your zip code. Call their regional office or their D.C. office or both. Ask for the staffer in charge of internet issues and tell him you want your lawmaker to co sponsor the Internet radio equality act. Tell them how much Internet radio means to you. More information is available at savenetradio.org. The law as it stands now is bad for artists, indie labels and small business.

#2 Copy and paste this blog entry into your own blogs, email lists and bulletins.

#3 If you write a blog, discuss this issue. If you don't write a blog, join the discussion on somebody else's blog. If you prefer Facebook, join any of the nine Save Net Radio discussion groups that have been created there, and join the discussion.

#4 Donate to the SaveNetRadio campaign. If you're a Facebook user, install the Causes app, join the SaveNetRadio cause, donate money and get others to join. They're both easy!

Here is a VERY partial list of some of the media organizations participating.

Yahoo!, Live365 stations, Rhapsody, MTV Online, AccuRadio, KCRW (Santa Monica, CA), Pandora, RadioIO, DigitallyImported, RadioParadise, 3WK, myMVY, Wizard Radio, Born Again Radio, Pearadio.com, Ear.fm, WGLI (Bablylon, NY), WMUK (Kalamazoo, MI), Head-On Radio Network, Zecom/Gemz Radio, monkeygrip music cafe, KFCF (Fresno, CA), LuckySevenRadio.com, Blue Power/Guitar Speak, PNA (Oak Park, IL), 60's Chicks Radio/Seasons & Celebrations Radio, STAR 107.9, WRPS/WebRadioPugetSound, Puregold Rock 'N Roll, NeverEndingWonder Radio, RadioMilwaukee, BAGeL Radio, Gotradio/100hitz, KDUN (Reedsport, OR), GDRadio.net, KQLZ (Los Angeles, CA), XPR/KXJZ (Sacramento, CA), NiceNoise.Net, BlackLight Radio, Pure Pop 24/7, Smooth Jazz and More, Reggae Nostalgia, WCH Radio/The Wave, WYGS Southern Gospel Radio Network, BluegrassCountry.org/WAMU.org, WRAJ Internet Radio

The time to act is now. Today. Because in three weeks time it will be too late.

2:30 pm - Yay I have a job
It's Walmart but it will keep me fed and gas in my car.
Not getting paid until the 19th but my dad has been helping me out here and there since I moved back home.
Jacksonville is less stressful and I'm very glad for that.
My room is almost altogether here at Rhonda's new house.
I just have a few odds and ends i need to sort through. I cleaned out my car and I didn't realize how much more stuff i actually had.
I still have a few odds and ends in Tally but they can wait until my room is in some order.
Still very much single and not looking for anything permanent. I'm gonna try the whole actual date thing.
A bunch of new clubs opened up here that I need to check out so plenty of hunting grounds.

Protesters Target Military Funeral
By Roger Weeder
First Coast News

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A military funeral set for Saturday is on a list to
be protested by the Westboro Baptist Church located in Topeka, Kansas.

Army Specialist Isaiah Calloway was killed in Afghanistan after his unit
was ambushed. Calloway, 23, graduated from Engelwood High School.

Shirley Phelps-Roper is with the Kansas church and told First Coast News
the church plans to send ten people to Jacksonville.

Phelps-Roper says with signs and song they plan to make a statement.
That statement according to the church member, "We want to help you
connect the dots from point 'a' that rebellious, disobedient and filthy
manner of life to point 'b' the dead soldier."

Theresa Wandzer is Calloway's foster mother. She considers Calloway her son.

When told about the planned protest, Wandzer said, "No disrespect, now
if you protest, that's disrespect. Isaiah would not like that. I know I
won't like that."

Florida has a new law that protects grieving military families from
"disturbances." State Representative Stan Jordan sponsored the law.

Jordan says, "Isn't it a shame in this society that you have to have a
law for bad manners. It’s just a shame. You cannot beat good manners."

The law carries with it a $1,000 fine and up to one year in jail if
convicted.

The funeral for Army Specialist Isaiah Calloway is set for Veterans Day,
this Saturday. It will be held at Bethel Baptist Church downtown.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few friends and I will be helping the Patriot Guard

the Patriot Guard, who have been invited by Spc. Calloway's widow:

Here is the address of the church, located right behind FCCJ downtown:
Bethel Baptist Church
215 Bethel Baptist St
Jacksonville, FL

The funeral starts at noon, the protesters plan on forming up at 11:15
a.m., and the Patriot Guard plans on forming the line by 10:45 a.m.

Patriot Guard Riders Mission Statement

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a "hawk" or a "dove". It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is. You don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives.

1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.

2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

The spirits must be looking out for me.

I got a refund from FSU that I wasn't expecting. Now I can pay my bills and cover some of the tests my doctors want me to have plus my medications.

I can also comfortably cover my bills and put food on the table.

The doctors let me in to the student healthcenter early so I could get my fasting blood work done.

After an encounter with hunch punch I realize that my body doesn't enough of the enzyme to break down alcohol properly. It was stupid for me to drink anyway with my borderline diabetes. Now I have another reason to quit.

Still doing good with the not smoking. I can smell things better and taste things more vividly. Not to mention I can breathe. Zuma has been good about not smoking in my room. That has been a major help.

Things are getting better.:)

2:44 pm - Yippee
I finished the first draft of my story for Fiction Workshop.

I finally got over the lung thing only to be hit by something else this time more throat intensive but still messing with my lungs. I'm glad I get to go to Thagard for free.

The FSU Pagan Student Association is reforming and I'm their new vice president.

I went to the Red Hills Pagan Council meeting today. I talked up the PSA and volunteered my security services for their ball since it's the weekend before Jax CUUPs/PPD Witches' Ball.

I'm still taking the lovely Mandy as my date to the Jacksonville ball. Zuma says she will start making my suit tomorrow. I can hardly wait.

Not much else going on.:)

My lungs are starting to clear out. I found out that bed rest is very boring.

My story in fiction needs to take a new turn because honestly I don't like it. Inspiration has been lacking though.

Jay gave me the ferret since he can't take her to Cali. I named her Méchante which is French for naughty/mischevious. Will post pics of her as soon as I get them developed.

My dad bought me one of those things that uses solar power to keep a car cool when it's parked. I hope it works.

My b-day is coming up. Not sure what I'm going to do for it. James wants to take me to Poor Pauls for ladies night then go for a traditional Wescott fountain swim. I'm game.:D I wanted to have un fais do-do but Zuma is allergic to seafood. Not sure i will be doing a Jacksonville party this year given my car trouble and the fact that I don't want to get so trashed I miss classes.

My right lung is full of fluid. Welcome to another semester of the FSU crud.:( At least I have the money to get x-rays and meds. I found out my allergy to guaifenesin maybe a fluke because someone gave me a pill which unbeknownst to me contained guaifenesin. I've been perfectly fine so I'm guessing what caused my seizure many years ago was the combination of meds that the navy docs gave me. Well so to get poked and prodded.
